Scale Free Flight Competition

Scale Free Flight is very popular in the UK with numerous competitions held throughout the year. To showcase a different aspect of Scale and encourage participation from all, a competition will be held to the rules listed below and is open to everyone. Pre-entry is mandatory and an entry form will follow soon. 

1 Eligible Models

The competition is open to any Free Flight scale model

2 Model Characteristics

Maximum weight of model without fuel 2 kg

Maximum I/C piston motor displacement 2.5cc

Electric motors – Maximum 200 Watts

The competitor may be required to demonstrate the effectiveness of any fitted cut-off safety device to the Competition Director before flights are carried out

Rubber and Co2 – No limit

Reaction (Jetex Rapier etc) (Local Rules may apply) No limit

3 Documentation

Proof of scale documentation is not required. Model must be of a scale model

4 Pre-Flight Scoring

The entered models will be assembled together prior to the contest in one place. Each Judge will assess the models for Realism and Craftsmanship and award a score between 0 and 100 for each model. Maximum total score 200

5 Flight Judging and Scoring

Each competitor will have the opportunity to make 4 flights at the Contest Director’s discretion. Dependant on weather and entry numbers

The model must remain airborne for at least 15 seconds for the flight to be judged and a qualifying flight score returned

The competitor must notify the Judges when he is ready to release the model

Each official flight will be judged in relation to the expected flight characteristics of the full-size subject aircraft

Two Flight Judges will mark each flight between 0 and 10 in increments of 0.5 for each phase of the flight. The flight scores of the two judges are added together for Total Flight Score

6 Flight Phases

(a) Initial climb K = 20

(b) Cruise K = 30

(c) Transition K = 10

(d) Descent and Landing Approach K = 20

(e) Realism in Flight K = 20

Total K = 100

7 Scoring

The Total Pre-Flight Score is added to the highest Total Flight Score to determine the Final Score

The highest Final Score will be used to determine the winner

In the event of a tied Final Score the next best flight score will be taken into account to determine placing
